Prevention Services

 

 The following prevention services are available to all Community members.

Enrollment with Behavioral Health is not required.

 The BHS Prevention Program supports the goals of the Gila River Prevention Coalition through the following prevention activities and trainings:

Community Education
The Prevention Program offers Community education sessions on marijuana, alcohol, meth, tobacco, Rx, suicide, parenting skills, mental health awareness, and other emerging trends.

Life Skills/Signs of Suicide
Life Skills education is provided in the schools and Community by serving Gila River students by using evidence-based, developmentally appropriate, equine-assisted learning and culturally sensitive curriculums.

Baby Smarts

Baby Smarts is a parenting program for Gila River families. The program provides parenting education, screenings, and support to parents and families to promote the healthy development of their children from pregnancy to age 5. The two main components of the program are parenting support groups and home visits.

How to identify people with thoughts of suicide, engage in an intervention, and connect them to resources.

  • Length: 2 days

 

safeTALK/QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer)  (Suicide Awareness For Everyone)

Focus: Suicide Awareness

How to identify people with thoughts of suicide and connect them to resources and provide helping skills, foundational knowledge about the relationship of mental illness and substance abuse to suicide risk, and how to help those who may be at risk of suicide.

Length: 3-4 hours (safeTALK)

Length: 1-2 hours (QPR)

Youth/Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)

Focus: To increase an awareness and understanding of Mental Health challenges, disorders, and crises among youth and adults and how to link them to resources available in the Community

Length: 8 hours

Survivors of Suicide Loss Workshops

  • Focus: To increase knowledge about the grief after suicide; to explore opportunities in the grieving process for personal growth; to provide a forum for survivors to learn new coping skills
  • Length: 4 hours
