With approximately 52 miles of state highway and over 22 miles of Interstate 10 that fall within the boundaries of the community, a significant part of our call volume is motor vehicle collisions. In fact the stretch of I-10 through the community is one of the busiest stretches of Interstate Highways for multi-patient collisions in the country. Due to this call volume and the nature of these types of incidents each employee at GREMS is issued vehicle extrication personal protective equipment or PPE and trained on the basics of vehicle disentanglement. This allows our medic unit crews to work within these dangerous operations and provide medical care to those who have been injured. Support 423 which is our east side EMS Battalion unit carries a full set of extrication tools which allows us to support the GRIC Fire Department’s lead in this area.
